POP server configuration

When setting up an email client to collect mail using POP, it is important that the mail server hostname is not set to your own domain name (for example mail.yourdomain.co.uk or pop.yourdomain.co.uk).

Customer domain names are not POP servers and will not accept POP connections.

You must use the Claranet POP server hostname:

pop.clara.net

Using your own domain name as the POP server will result in failed connections or authentication errors, even if email delivery itself is working correctly.

Our recommended settings are:

Claranet will be changing the way your email can connect on 8th April- check your connection settings now to ensure no disruption to service

Claranet will be changing the way your email client can connect to our ClaraMail services on 8th April 2025.

From 8th April 2025 the ClaraMail service will require your email client to use SSL/TLS when connecting to POP and IMAP services. We’re making this change to increase customer security and ensure that all login details are encrypted.

How will I be impacted?

After the change, if your email client is configured without SSL/TLS, a message will appear the next time that the client checks in to retrieve messages.

Important change which may effect your website and domain - upgrading the PHP version to 7.2

Claranet has made an update to the webhosting platform upgrading the PHP version to 7.2. Claranet will be making the final change to 7.2 on the 17th January 2022 and PHP 5.5 will no longer be available.

This has been done to allow for the latest versions of Wordpress and, more importantly, for security of the platform and our customers data.

Our customers can switch between PHP versions 5.5 and 7.2 via the admin portal for your domain in the mean time for testing your website compatibility, your guide for this is below.

A: Check any error messages displayed in the browser and the PHP error log in the `logs` directory of your webspace.

New Webmail

Claranet are launching a new Webmail on the 28th September 2021. Access to this can be found at the following

https://webmail.clara.net/

Once logged in customers will be able to switch to the new version via a link at the top. For the moment customers will be able to switch back to the old version

Claranet will switch full time to the new version at a later date
