How to add and use BorderScout

Currently, this advice is only valid for new BorderScout users or current users who signed up for BorderScout from April 2010 onwards - customers on the old platform will soon be offered a migration to the new however, after which point this advice will be valid for all

How do I purchase BorderScout for my existing accounts?

You must either buy a single license or a block of licenses (5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 – 1 license required per mailbox) and then assign these to mailboxes as you wish via the control panel. You don't have to buy BorderScout for every mailbox you have, just the ones you most want to protect. You can even re-allocate a license from one mailbox to another if you close it or if it becomes less important.

When creating a new pack you can add BorderScout during the sign-up process by simply clicking on the option during the pack creation process.

To add BorderScout to an existing Clarahost account:

  1. Go to the Clarahost control panel at http://admin.clarahost.co.uk/login
  2. Log on using your username and password (use the “forgotten your password?” link if necessary)
  3. Click on the domain name(s) for the pack you want to add BorderScout service to (left hand side)
  4. Click on the ‘Change Package’ link on the grey bar across the top (Just below package name)
  5. From here you have two choices:
    • If you DON’T want to re-grade your pack then pick your current package name from the dropdown menu and click ‘Choose Options’
    • If you DO want to re-grade your pack then select the pack you want to re-grade to from the dropdown menu and click ‘Choose Options’

On the next screen you will be prompted to choose your options, this is where you can choose to add BorderScout accounts (If you are staying on the same pack, be sure to re-select any additional options you may have chosen when you first signed up or you will lose these). When you have finished click ‘Get Quote’

The final screen will show you how much you are due to be charged, the initial charge will be prorated to the end of your current billing period, and then the full charge for the service will be reflected in the next bill after that.

How do I add BorderScout to a mailbox?

First you have to purchase a pack of BorderScout licenses, either during the sign-up process or during the re-grade process as described above.
Once this is done:

  1. Go to the Clarahost control panel at http://admin.clarahost.co.uk/login
  2. Log on using your username and password (use the “forgotten your password?” link if necessary)
  3. Click on the domain name(s) for the pack you want on the left hand side
  4. Click on the ‘Email’ tab – this will give you a view of how many BorderScout licenses you have in total and how many you have currently used
  5. Select an account you want to add BorderScout to and click on the ‘edit’ link for that account
  6. On the next screen, as long as you have unused licenses in your pack you will see the ‘Enable BorderScout’ button on the bottom of the screen. Click this button to add BorderScout to that account.
  7. You should automatically return to the previous screen, and after a few seconds the BorderScout options will be available for that account.

How do I manage BorderScout settings?

You can set default settings for all mailboxes on the pack which can then be overridden by changing the settings for specific mailboxes

To change global settings:

  1. In the control panel, click on the ‘Email’ tab
  2. Next click on the ‘BorderScout settings’ option that appears in the grey bar
  3. On the following page, amend settings as required, then click ‘Save Changes’ (if you navigate away from this page before clicking this button your changes will not be implemented)
    • ““Quarantine” option sends suspect emails to the quarantine folder
    • “Tag” means they get delivered to your mailbox as normal but with a warning tag added to the subject line
    • “Blackhole” means that you will never even know the email was sent
    • BorderScout will decide for itself if an email contains a virus or not, but the spam definitions are more flexible – the number you set is the percentage certainty that BorderScout must reach before treating it as spam. A HIGH number here means it is LESS likely to treat email as spam, a LOW number means it is MORE likely to treat email as spam. All email classed as spam will be treated the same however, and that will be based upon the setting below

There are two ways to override these global settings for individual accounts:

When logged in to the control panel, click on the ‘edit’ link for the individual mailbox (from the ‘Email’ tab). From here you can:

    • View quarantined emails by clicking on the ‘Quarantined Emails’ tab
    • Add an email address to the ‘Whitelist’ to ensure it always gets delivered regardless
    • Add an email address to the ‘Blacklist’ to ensure that mail from this address is always rejected
    • Change BorderScout settings for that mailbox only by clicking on the ‘BorderScout Protection Settings’ button

Alternatively, you can give the individual mailbox owner the ability to do all these things themselves by directing them to:

https://admin.clarahost.co.uk/mailbox

and telling them to log on using their email address and password. Once logged in they can:

    • Go to the ‘preferences’ tab to change BorderScout settings
    • Go to the ‘Filters’ tab to add addresses to the white/blacklists
    • Go to the ‘Quarantine’ tab to view quarantined emails
  • Dial-up
